JJGames

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 14, 2005, 3:44 PM
JJGames is an aspiaring game company which is in search of artists (No relation to JJGames.com). I plan to run this account similairly to a club, i.e. posting the art here and giving credit to the artists.

Anyways, we are looking for artists to draw images for a card game which we are planning to use to start off the buisness (I may give out more information on the game later, but for now it is confidential). If you have found that you have been added to our Friends List, it means that you have been selected as a possible artist. You will soon recieve a note asking you if you are willing to be a JJGames artist.

As a JJGames artist, you will be asked to work for free (at least at first). We don't know for sure how well the product will sell, or even if we will be able to start producing it. However all of the artists will be recieving credit for their work and hopefuly we will be able to offer pay to all those who help. There will eventually (hopefully within a week) be a list of the pictures that we need posted. We ask for permission to alter the art you submit (you will still recieve credit for the picrure, this is just so we can add color to pictures that don't already have it and so that if there are small details we feel we need to fix, we can fix them).

That's all I can think of at the moment... If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Awesome, welcome aboard :) Thanks.

That's a pretty brave undertaking. My sister and brother-in-law produced a few games... Well, I would be happy to help out as much as my limited ability allows. Good luck!

That is completly understandable. It is up to you weather or not you trust me, or will participate in this project. If you are realy sure that you can't trust me, then I will not hold it against you and I will let you be. We will be giving credit where credit is due and we won't alter art without the artist's permission (or if we feel it is necessary we can ask artists who don't like other people touching their art to make a change).

But would I ever trust you anyways, that is the question. I don't even trust people who walk up to me in real life, offering me money, for my work; I've had it stolen too many times. Even when they give me money, it still doesn't make up for when they erase my name from it. And then there's the fact I NEVER let anyone munipulate my art. The only person I have ever let even color in my draws is my best friend/rival/even partner.. (I hardly even let her use my best pencils..) That's just another reason as to why I do not trust this scheme of your's..

I'll do what I can to get some solid proof, but there is nothing you can trust 100% on the internet is there? The closest I can come is [link] which is how we plan to get started.
~JJGames:iconJJGames: Oct 15, 2005, 10:42:46 AM
It's fine if you don't want work for free. What we are looking for are artists who are willing to work for free and have their art spread and recognized as theirs, with the bonus of being paid once the company has the ability to do so assuming they get started.

You wouldn't necesarily have prints for sale here if it is good enough; first you need to pay for a membership, then you need to pay extera to sell prints unless I'm mistaken, and even then you don't know for sure if someone will buy your art.

Like I said, I will give out information as my buisness partner and I determine that it is safe to do so. If you want information on how we are planning to start the company you can go to [link]
~JJGames:iconJJGames: Oct 15, 2005, 10:32:54 AM
I understand your point of view completly, and you are right; it is far too easy to steal art. It is also just as easy to steal a buisness plan that is released to the public, and that is why I'm reluctant to give out such information just as you are reluctant to give others your work.

The problem with waiting for us to get started is that we need the art done to get started. That is why we are asking artists to work for free until we have the means of paying; there is no money until we have all the art we need so that we can start printing the cards. That and I have no idea how to do buisness transactions over the internet yet... Which I will probably get help with from the accountant we will be working with over the summer assuming we get into the program (if you want more information about the program you can go to [link].ca).

It is true that you can get websites for free, but think about it; would you trust me just because I threw togeter some information on a freewebs site?

If any company stole my work I have every origional in my home, thankfully I don't do digital art, most is traditional. but still, If I were to see something solid to say that this is lagit then who knows, maybe in the future.

but for now I'm to set in my own ways.

Yeah radical is right. Most people dont want to work for free and art theft is so easy.... plus, if our art was good enough to be on something that will be sold... dont you think we would just have set prints for sell here?

Maybe after youve developed a little....I dunno. I'm still on th edge with my decision.

Let me explain to you as to why many artists are reluctant to do art for others: In this world, corporations go around stealing our work for their logos, for they are too sleezy to just pay us. And the fact we can't do ANYTHING once they steal it, and put their own copyright to it...even if we have the origional, or all the layers on photoshop it took to color it, we can't do anything.

And the fact I won't have my art in use by anyone else, until I have completed my art book, so I will be known by a greater audiance, so that it is less likely that a corporation would dare steal my work, as they might be afraid of a public outburst...

Maybe once you get started, and I see all this, I will agree... Also, you CAN get web sites for free.

Again, understandable. I'd ask that you read the previous to responses. I can't give you the examples of your art that I was looking at, but I did see the type of art I was looking for in your gallery.
~JJGames:iconJJGames: Oct 14, 2005, 7:26:15 PM
If you aren't interested, it is fine. However there is some of your art that is the quality and style quality of what we are looking for (though they would need to be colored, but from what I saw in your gallery you would be able to do that on your own negating the need to alter your work), specifically the ones submitted to the Gore Glories club (I think that's what it's called). You can see my previous response as well if you are looking for more.

However if you are still not interested, again I understand. Just let me know an I'll remove you from the list.

Unfortunatly we don't have a website as we currently have no money. We are planning to be able to start the company off a government grant through a program designed to help students start their own buisnesses. We will be submitting a buisness plan in March and assuming it is good enough we will be getting a grant. We won't have a website until we have made enough money off the product to support one, and we need to find someone good enough with websites to make one. The company isn't official yet.

I understand your reluctance, and I'll understand if you aren't interested in helping. What I am asking artists to draw is their own art, that is all. People I know in real life, as well as my buisness partner (and myself assuming I can find someone who can alter it enough to make it look good) will be taking care of the personalized characters. Basically what we want will be common fantasy monsters; artists get to choose what they are interested in drawing from the list.

I would tell you the exact rules of the game, and I would like to, except that I'm quite protective of them. It's a good plan that we have, and we don't want it stolen. Like I said, I will dive out more details later. If you have any specific questions that would make you feel more comfortable with helping please note it to me an I will give you the best answer I can at this point in time.

I'd rather not have my art distributed for free and altered at that. Anyways my art isn't that good, I doubt if you put my stuff on cards that people would buy it.

Regards.
